Seven Evaluative researching

While similar methodologies are used for evaluative researching as for other forms of research, ‘evaluation’ is often seen to lack the status of other forms of research. This chapter will review definitions of evaluation and the various ways in which evaluative research can be carried out. The chapter promotes evaluation as a key method of research, and its place as a legitimate research approach is discussed. Inclusive and emancipatory approaches will be considered in designing research and in the interpretation of findings.

Researchers and potential researchers usually begin with abstract ideas or phenomena that they are interested in knowing more about. These ideas or concepts are operationalized in particular ways depending on the research tradition involved. In the case of quantitative studies, dependent and independent variables are identified in a hypothetical relationship that is investigated with the aim of proving causal relationships between them. In qualitative studies, phenomena and concepts are explored thematically within theoretical and contextual frameworks that seek to find deeper understanding and meaning of the experiences and realities of participants in particular situations. In evaluative researching, the programme or activity to be evaluated establishes the parameters of the research task. However, as we explore this type of researching, we will see these relationships may be approached in different ways depending on a number of factors. In our exploration of evaluative researching we will look more closely at the ways in which it can be understood and positioned with equal status to other approaches within specific research contexts. Evaluative researching uses quantitative and qualitative methods and the ways in which these can be utilized will be discussed with the aim of revitalizing the merits of evaluative researching as a legitimate approach.
